Tell us about yourself!
Hi! I’m Rachel, and I am a fourth grade teacher! A little about me, I went to SUNY Oneonta for Undergrad, and Manhattanville College for my Master’s . I am so excited to say this year I have been hired as a full-time fourth grade teacher going into the 2020-2021 school year!
What inspired you to become a teacher?
Whenever I think back to what inspired me to become a teacher I always think back to the time where I HATED school... yes, a teacher that used to hate school. From kindergarten to 3rd grade I hated school and my parents were always getting phone calls home about my behavior 😶 But, this all changed when I was in 4th grade because I had an amazing teacher. This teacher showed me that learning can be fun and not a daunting task. She let us do cool projects and partner work and helped me find books I enjoyed reading. Ever since 4th grade I have loved school and known I wanted to be a teacher. But more than just that, I knew I wanted to be the teacher that inspires students to love learning and reaches even those students with a negative mindset towards school, like my 4th grade teacher did for me.
What is your favorite thing about being a teacher?
My favorite thing about being a teacher is connecting with my students! Kids are seriously just the best and I love getting to know all their personalities. I always do a "morning meeting" every morning and it is during that time of the day where my kids can share something going on in their lives or just as general questions where I learn so much about them. It is my favorite part of the day!
Can you describe what makes you feel FABULOUS when teaching/being a teacher?
I feel fabulous as a teacher when I see my students gain confidence in themselves! There is nothing better than knowing I helped my kiddos learn to believe in themselves. Seeing a student's face light up when they finally understand a concept or skill that has been difficult for them is the most rewarding part of the job. Teaching isn't always the easiest profession (especially during these crazy times) but when you help a child succeed, whether it be academically or socially/emotionally, you remember why it is one of the most important jobs out there!
Thank you, Rachel, for being a role model and positive example to each child’s life you encounter. With your patient, caring, and kind nature, it is teacher’s like you who will set up our next generation for success. We know the future will be nothing but bright and successful for you, and we look forward to following along!
