Sophia LaFrance is a 24-year-old content creator at ESPN, a passionate philanthropist, a public speaker, and the founder of the social media platform Empower to Succeed. Sophia works as the lead graphics content associate for college basketball, college football, MLB, and the WNBA studio shows on ABC, ESPN, and ESPN2. Her work ethic and leadership skills earned her a spot as a Content Associate Captain in March.
At ESPN, Sophia is greatly involved in and out of the control room. Within her first month at the company, she pitched a social media initiative in which she interviewed various leaders in the company who started as production assistants. Final pieces can be found on ESPN Next social media accounts. She also led an ESPN Thanksgiving Food Drive for local Feeding America food pantries in Bristol, Charlotte, and Los Angeles. Over 1,200 donations were made to the drive. In addition, Sophia participates in Junior Achievement Career Panels and Career Day specials to provide career advice and mentorship to students. Sophia loves her job because she truly feels valued at the company. She enjoys trailblazing her path in a traditionally male-dominated field while using her voice to make a positive impact within the company.
Sophia is a proud alumna of the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications. She served as an ambassador to the college, a weekday news reporter and sports anchor for WUFT-News as well as a basketball and gymnastics beat reporter for ESPN Gainesville.
Now, Sophia plans to continue her education, working towards a Juris Doctor degree, beginning in Fall 2021. With a strong commitment to education, Sophia received a scholarship for academic excellence from every law school she received an offer of admission. Sophia hopes to combine her law degree with her background in television and journalism to earn a role as a part-time legal commentator for a news network in addition to working as a full-time attorney.
Currently, Sophia is the founder of the social media platform Empower To Succeed. She leads professional development workshops for young women and conducts interviews with women from various career paths. Her goal on her platform is to inspire young women to confidently and authentically pursue their career and life aspirations.
Sophia enjoys volunteering across the state of Connecticut. She is a volunteer for Dress For Success Hartford, Make-A-Wish Connecticut, and other charities. At Dress for Success, Sophia conducts mock interviews and helps clients build résumés. At Make-At-Wish CT, Sophia is a Wish Granter and event volunteer.
Sophia is the reigning Miss Wallingford USA. She looks forward to competing in Miss Connecticut USA 2021 in early June. The winner of Miss Connecticut USA will go on to compete for the prestigious title of Miss USA in a nationally-televised pageant competition.
